Today, 111 years ago, the first Indy 500 automobile race held at Indianapolis Motor Speedway (IMS) in Speedway, Indiana, USA.
The winner was Ray Harroun (1879-1968) after 6 hours, 42 minutes and 11 seconds on the „Brickyard“.
The winning car of Ray Harroun was a Marmon Wasp – the only car with a rear-view mirror on the track. Eighty thousand spectators watched the event on May 30th, 1911. Through the years the Indy 500 became one of the most prestigious motorsports events in the world.
