Corona - COVID-19 prevention and protection

Posted by zapp on Apr 07 2020 in other stuff, HowTo, FAQ and Tech Hints

Well, this is an off-topic article. No big engines, no rusty stuff, but important things to say in a time the whole world runs mad. I'll provide you with informations to reduce the chance of getting infected by the Corona virus. But first of all, let me clarify this: even if most borders are closed, Corona is not a chinese, US, UK and/or italien problem. The Corona pandemic is a fucking human problem. All stuff you buy on the world market to sell it for higher rates - masks, fabrics, medical equipment - is missing in other parts of the world.

And because fabrics and medical masks are rare these days, here are two real alternatives.

First, let me show to a way to build a non reusable mask für less than 3 cent in 3-5 minutes. All you need is any piece of wire, two (inter folded) paper towels and a office stapler. If you finished wearing it, simply burn it. This mask will NOT protect you from getting infected by the virus, but it will help to not infect others. If everyone would wear a simple mask, the spreading will end.

The stuff you need

Fold one towel over the short side in the middle and cut it in two halfs

Twist both halfs of the towel

Fold the second towel over the long side, put in the piece of wire at the folded end and fix it with two staples
Corona - COVID-19 prevention and protection
Fold a "Z" in the upper half of the towl and fix it left/right with one staple. Fold a second "Z" below the first

Use staples to fix the twisted parts on each side

Well, maybe you think someone should kick Zapp's ass for a crap like this, here is a hint to protect yourself from getting infected:

Medical FFP-2 and FFP-3 masks (FFP stands for Filtering Face Piece) protect the person who is wearing the mask from beeing infected. The problem is, in my personal opinion, you can't buy medical masks today. It's all sold out. Even hospitals are looking for masks. I think (I don't want to blame anyone, this is just MY OPINION) the stuff you can buy today are just rip-offs.
So what now? If you are working on cars, trucks and cycles you maybe have a painting mask (respirator). And maybe that paint mask has the left/right quarter-turn fastener (bayonet). This fastener will fit the 3M filter systems. The filter boxes have two parts. One coal filterbox and a fabric filter. The important part is the fabric filter. Try to buy a 3M "P3" or "P3R" filter. The structure of these fabrics is small enough to filter out viruses, spores and bacteria. You will look like a member of the CDC in an Ebola village, but you are protected!

But please keep in mind: 6 feet distance to other persons, don't touch your face and wash your hands very often are much better protection than any mask!
