Remove the door latch without removing the window and/or regulator

Posted by zapp on Oct 21 2015 in HowTo, FAQ and Tech Hints, Ford Trucks pre '48, Ford Cars pre '48

Is there a way to remove the door latch without removing the window or regulator of your 1940 Ford car or truck? The answer is yes, it is possible. Removing the window can be tricky, but you can avoid it, if you only want to replace the spring on the latch.

1. Open window about one inch
2. Remove inside handles (door and window) and inspection cover

5. Remove the five screws of the window regulator

6. Push down the window with regulator attached (push regulator a bit inside because of the window handle pin)
7. Push regulator inside again and pull the door latch down between door and regulator

8. Push window/regulator up and remove door latch through inspection cover

That's it. Door was from a  a 1940 1.5 ton truck (01-T), but should work for many other Ford cars and trucks from the 30th and 40th.

Thanks for these pictures and instructions. The guy who designed this door must
have been crazy or drunk. What a nightmare.
Thanks again.

Replaced passenger side remote latch spring. Everything went fine until I reinstalled the outer door handle. The door handle went all the way in like it should but it will not rotate. It acts like the door is locked? The interior door handle and latch works just fine. window rolls up and down just fine, But the exterior door handle will not move? Where did I go wrong?
